COUNCIL MEETING LASTED MORE THAN FOUR HOURS

While Grimsby council often handles serious or complicated matters, sometimes, the items are quicker to deal with.

Some of the bigger items this week were Niagara West MPP Sam Oosterhoff's refusal to attend a meeting, and financially supporting McNally House Hospice.

Here are three items of the items from the committee of the whole, and regular council meetings on Monday, Jan. 16 that Grimsby council dealt with quickly:

WHAT'S IN A NAME?

Although many "Grimsbonians" already call themselves that, resident Duncan Storey delegated to council to have the town recognize the name. He said having an official demonym for those from Grimsby, Ont., will help separate them from "Grimsbarians," who reside in Grimsby, England.

LOOK BACK ON GRIMSBY'S 100

Trevor Ruzylo, the town's recreation supervisor, gave a recap of events the town held in 2022 in celebration of Grimsby's centennial. Some of the notable stats include that 1,400 pieces of Grimsby 100 merchandise were sold, with about 1,000 of that being T-shirts. Overall, they had 10,000 social media reactions, and 1,800 visits to the website for the big event, which was held on Sept. 24. According to Ruzylo, more than 30,000 people attended the various events.

INTERIM CONTROL BYLAW LIFTED IN GRIMSBY BEACH

An interim control bylaw that paused new development in Grimsby Beach has been lifted. The bylaw was placed in February 2020 while the land use study was conducted. The land use study then lead to a Grimsby Beach Secondary Plan, and a zoning amendment, which were then appealed at the Ontario Land Tribunal.

Through discussions, there was an agreement with the OLT that the appeals would no longer encompass all of Grimsby Beach, but would instead be specific to a property at 33 Victoria Terrace.

The site specific appeals will be heard at a hearing scheduled to start on Oct, 2, for five days.
