MOYA DILLON mdillon@durhamregion.com

The Book Drunkard Festival is back with a full slate of bestselling Canadian and international authors. The festival, hosted by Blue Heron Books, kicks off on Oct. 5 at the Trail Hub with Swedish author Fredrik Backman making one of only two Canadian stops to discuss his new novel, "The Winners," with interviewer Terry Fallis.

Also on the roster are Ann-marie Macdonald discussing her novel, "Fayne," festival veteran Bianca Marais moving from interviewer to interviewee to discuss her new novel, "The Witches of Moonshyne Manor," a celebration of Lucy Maud Montgomery's legacy with fun activities for the kids during "A Nod to Maude," some Spooky Family Fun with Jeremy John, the launch of "Stealing John Hancock" and, to close out the lineup, returning author John Irving stopping by the Trail Hub to discuss his new offering, "The Last Chairlift."

Indigenous stories will be explored through the eyes of three storytellers: seven-time Stanley Cup winner Bryan Trottier and sportscaster Stephen Brunt will discuss Trottier's new bio, "All Roads Home"; Jess Thistle will be hosting A Night of Poetry, with readings from his new collection, "Scars and Stars"; and David A. Robertson will discuss his new adult novel, "The Theory of Crows," a tale of the bonds of family and gifts offered by the land.

For the foodies, author Hannah Sunderani will present her French-inspired vegan recipes at the Fig Kitchen and Market, while Deirdre Buryk, author of "Peak Season," will demonstrate how to make the most of Ontario's seasonal produce during a demonstration at Urban Pantry Restaurant.
