ORANGEVILLE SUPPORTS TRAFFIC STUDY OF HIGHWAY 10

MUNICIPALITY WANTS TO BE INCLUDED WITH THE TOWN OF CALEDON

Orangeville council plans to crack down on drivers speeding aggressively through town by collaborating with nearby municipalities on a traffic calming report.

Council voted in favour of a motion at a meeting on Feb. 27 to support the Town of Caledon in its request to the provincial government on a traffic safety study of Highway 10.

"This has been an issue for a long period of time," said Deputy Mayor Todd Taylor. "I would like to say I think Caledon has done a great job of advocating for change."

The Town of Caledon made a delegation at a Rural Ontario Municipal Association meeting recently, requesting the province work with them to develop a term of reference for a traffic and road safety study and for it to be funded by the Ministry of Transportation. The Town of Orangeville states it would benefit from being included in a study as a portion of the highway runs through the community.

"In our little stretch, you don't hear much about it, but we all know it's a problem," said Taylor. "The big thrust seems to be in Caledon and north of us, but everybody is travelling at an aggressive speed through that highway, and the reality is, it feels like you should, but you shouldn't because you're part of our town."

The town states the highway, from the northern border of Brampton to the intersection of First

Street in Orangeville, experiences high traffic volumes, chronic speeding and an increased number of commercial vehicles.

Town of Orangeville staff will be available for consultation as part of this project. A copy of the letter of support will be sent to Premier Doug Ford, Deputy Premier Sylvia Jones, Minister of Transportation Caroline Mulroney, the Town of Caledon and all municipalities in Dufferin County.
