HOCKEY COMMUNITY HELPS SUPPORT PEMBROKE COACH

The local hockey scene is asking the community's support for Pembroke Lumber Kings assistant coach Todd Clarke.

Todd, known to friends as Clarkie, was recently re-diagnosed with cancer and is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatments until October.

A GoFundMe page, organized in his honour by family friend Jason Spencer, has garnered over $14,000 in donations so far; top fundraisers include Dale McTavish and Sheldon Keefe, former owners of the Lumber Kings. Spencer expects it to be a battle and appreciates any support for Todd and his family.

"Clarkie has been active in the hockey community for years, having coached U-18 in Carlton Place and now Junior A with the Pembroke Lumber Kings of the CCHL," he said. "We are asking for the hockey community to come together to give back to a guy who has given it so much. Clarkie has coached hundreds of kids over the years, unselfishly giving his time and never asking for anything in return."

Spencer adds that Todd started chemo May 9 and is currently in good spirits.

In addition to the fundraiser, the Renfrew Junior AWolves team is planning a ball hockey tournament June 16 to help Todd, also a minor hockey coach in town, and his family offset costs as they continue fighting the cancer.

Over the past couple years, Todd raised nearly $15,000 for Movember, raising money for cancer research. Anyone who would like to donate may do so at GoFundMe.com.
