LAKE SCUGOG WATER QUALITY IMPROVEMENT CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

TOWNSHIP EXPECTS WORK ON OIL AND GRIT SEPARATORS TO BEGIN MARCH 8, RUN THROUGH THE MONTH

A portion of a municipal parking lot on Water Street will be occupied with construction equipment through March as the township kicks off an ambitious plan to improve water quality in Lake Scugog.

Installation of an oil and grit separator was scheduled to begin on March 8 near Joe Fowler Park and it's expected construction will finish by the end of the month, although final restoration and landscaping is anticipated to commence in the spring when the weather is favourable for sodding.

Main Line Water and Sewer Company has been contracted by the township to install an oil and grit separator in Joe Fowler Park, near Parking Lot 2

Fowler on Water Street. The work will include excavation to install an oil and grit separator midpipe on the existing storm sewer leading to the lake.

Oil and grit separators are underground storage tanks designed to protect waterways from suspended sediment, free oils, heavy particulates, floating debris and pollutants that attach to particles. This oil and grit separator is being installed with support from Kawartha Conservation as part of the Lake Scugog Enhancement Project to mitigate the stormwater inputs into the lake.

During the construction period, the northern part of the parking lot will not be accessible as it will

be occupied by construction equipment and materials to facilitate this project.

As well, Scugog is also advising residents that three trees beside the Joe Fowler Picnic Shelter are scheduled for removal to accommodate the installation of a new picnic shelter.

For more information about the project, email Dan Rosebrugh at drosebrugh@scugog.ca or call 905-985-7346, ext. 145.
