NEW GRANDVIEW KIDS IN AJAX GETTING CLOSER TO OPENING

It's stallion the early construction phases, but a lot of action is taking place at the New Grandview Kids site in Ajax.

And construction is well under way, according to the latest newsletter.

The Grandview Children's Treatment Centre Redevelopment Project (the New Grandview Kids) will be an open, welcoming and inclusive communitybased pediatric facility supporting an integrated mix of rehabilitation, medical and clinical services, as well as education and research activities.

The new Harwood Road North location is scheduled to open in the fall of 2024.

Once complete, Grandview Kids will consolidate its existing main site in Oshawa and multiple satellite locations into the new purpose-built facility located on 5.06 acres of land, donated by the Town of Ajax. Grandview Kids will maintain three satellite locations, in Clarington, Port Perry and Oshawa, and its partnership with the Whitby Abilities Centre.

HERE'S THE LATEST

The project is in Phase 2, which involves building

the substructure and the building enclosure. In March 2023, the crane was erected, enabling heavier materials to be brought onsite, such as rebar, pipes and forming the foundations.

Prior to this, the following work had to take place before the new building was able to take shape:

SITE PREPARATION

This included clearing and grubbing and dewatering. These activities included safely removing excess soil and water from the site and safely relocating it.

MANAGING WATER LEVELS

Workers removed around 355,000 litres of water from the site, equivalent to 177,500 two-litre soda bottles. For this project, the excess water went through quality and quantity treatment before it is discharged into a nearby stormwater pond.

REMOVING EXCESS SOIL

To prepare for the foundation, around 33,000 cubic metres of soil were transported to a local company called Lafarge. This amount of soil is equivalent to 45 cargo airplanes filled with soil. It was classified as land rehabilitation and will be used to fill in a mined-out gravel pit.

REDUCING OR DIVERTING CONSTRUCTION WASTE

For the development of the New Grandview Kids, 4.45 tonnes of waste will be diverted, which specifically addresses the waste management goal of "reduce and reuse."

Phase 3 will include interior finishes; mechanical, plumbing an electrical installations; and a security system installation. This will be followed by another three phases before the building opens up.
