MORE THAN 600 TREES PLANTED NEAR DOG PARK

It's the kind of shady plan that people can get behind.

This past Saturday (Sept. 24), the City of Peterborough organized volunteers to plant 620 new trees in Farmcrest Park, adjacent to the off-leash dog park in the City's east end.

According to municipal staff, this planting supports the City's Urban Forest Strategic Plan and is in addition to its regular tree planting program, which sees about 400 trees planted annually.

A variety of maples, oaks, spruces, and other trees native to our zone, were planted for an authentic look and resilience, states Coun. Lesley Parnell.

Volunteers from RBC and the Rotary Club of Peterborough rolled up their sleeves to plant the new trees. The plantings are adjacent to the off-leash dog park with some larger trees adjacent to the parking lot area and along the pathway.

The off-leash dog park is located in Farmcrest Park at 1900 Ashburnham Dr. It runs along the south side of Willowcreek Trail. The entrance to the park is directly across from Peterborough Distribution Inc. There is no fee to use the park.

The City is being supported by RBC Dominion Securities, the Excelsior Group, Peterborough Homes, the Rotary Club of Peterborough, and GreenUP in this plan.

Urban trees improve soil and water conservation, store carbon, moderate local climate by providing shade, increase wildlife habitat and improve the land's capacity to adapt to climate change.
