Led by Parry Sound's own Mark Ideson, Team Canada swept up the silver medal at the World Wheelchair Curling Championship held in Richmond, B.C.

Along with skip Ideson, representing Canada were fourth Jon Thurston, third Ina Forrest, second Gil Dash, and fifth Marie Wright.

Twelve teams from all over the world battled it out over nine days to be the world champions.

Team Canada cleared through the round-robin with a 9-2 record, and headed into the playoffs in second place behind only China at 10-1. The two teams battled in a tight gold medal game with only single points being traded early, and the teams tied 2-2 after five ends.

China took a one-point lead in the sixth end and Canada's fourth player, Thurston, tried to tie the game but came up light, resulting in China stealing two points and ultimately a 5-2 victory on March 12.

Ideson's mother, Judy, said the match was a nail-biter.

"(China's) a very strong team," she said. "Both teams played well, but they got the upper hand."

Her husband, Terry, said matches against China usually have them on the edge of their seats.

Back at the Beijing 2022 Paralympic Winter Games, Canada took bronze after losing to China 5-9 in the semifinals.

"Canada and China always have a very good game," said Judy.

China will be the first team to have its name on the new trophy, the Kate Caithness Salver.

The close final game against China can be viewed on YouTube along with Team Canada's other matches.
