REMAINS OF MISSING MAN FOUND

The search for Shaun "Sandy" Mullen is over.

Mullen was 59 when last seen on April 3, 2018. On May 2 his remains were found in a wooded area alongside Oastler Park Drive, near the Highway 400 interchange in Parry Sound.

"(Two OPP officers on May 9) informed us that dental records confirm that remains found in the Oastler Park area of Parry Sound are in fact my dad, Shaun," wrote his daughter, Jessica, on social media.

"He was sick (colon cancer) and sad, he left the hospital, gathered some things like family photos which were found with his remains, and went camping in a beautiful spot, in one of his favourite places. No foul play is indicated, and he seems to have simply went peacefully asleep while camping in one spot by the lake, on a very cold night.

"Although bittersweet, this news brings a bit of closure to our family, although we may never truly know what happened."

This news comes after years of searching that included possible sightings of the father and grandfa

ther locally, in the U.S. and outside the province. In April 2018, there was a sighting of a man fitting his description hitchhiking on Highway 141 in Seguin Township, followed by a report that a missing person in Florida resembled him, and another that he may have been in western Canada.

"Last night, I cheersed to my dad and ate licorice while watching the sunset, one of his favourite things," Jessica's May 10 post continued.

"He loved boats and oceans and lakes, snowmobiles, golf and fishing, his family and friends, and was kind and friendly to people he came across, as attested by the many strangers who share their

fond memories of my dad with me, whether it be from volunteering or his love of cheering on the local hockey team. Shaun, 'Sandy' Mullen was a great dad and great guy and has been and will continue to be missed."

The West Parry Sound OPP were contacted the afternoon of May 2 and responded with its crime unit, the North East Region Emergency Response Team and the OPP's Forensic Identification Services Unit.
