JESSE JOHNSON Jesse Johnson is a freelance reporter and member of Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

"This opportunity means so much to me. I get the chance to show that Indigenous People are just as capable as everyone else, that we are resilient. I want to show the kids in Alderville that they can do anything."

Gabriella de Haas, a Grade 12 Anishnaabekwe from Alderville First Nation, is one of the 90 finalists for the Loran Scholarship. She attends St. Mary's Catholic Secondary School in Cobourg.

Founded in 1988, the Loran Scholars Foundation was the first national organization in Canada to grant undergraduate awards based on a mix of academic achievement, extracurricular activity and leadership potential.

The Loran Award is valued at $100,000 over four years, including mentorship, funding for summer internships and participation in an extensive network of past and present scholars. The final round of interviews were held in Toronto from Feb. 24 - 26.

For de Haas, this means more funding for her university education. Her plan is to become an Indigenous educator.

"I've wanted to be an educator for several years, but my passion has turned me to Indigenous education."

Outside of school, de Haas is a fancy shawl dancer who loves to spend her time creating. She loves to sew, bead, draw and paint. She is also learning how to hand drum and sing in the language with a group of women in Alderville First Nation.

As a young teenager, de Haas wanted a deeper connection to her culture.

"As I've gone through my journey of rediscovery, I've realized how many struggles Indigenous People still face. There is still a sense that Indigenous People are far from real or a people from the past, but we are a thriving and resilient people."

One of her favourite experiences at Alderville First Nation was her time working at the Alderville Health Centre.

"I got to meet so many community members, both young and old. The connections I made sparked a love for my people and gave me a sense of pride to be from Alderville. Our community is so strong and supportive. Our Elders are so wise and our youth are so strong. I am proud to call Alderville home."

de Haas was asked what she loves most about being Anishnaabe.

"I love the value of our teachings and the ability we have to bring people together. Our teachings hold so much truth about our world. Our people are always welcoming and will care for others no matter what. We understand that love and respect create peace to all people and honour the land."

"The Seven Grandfather teachings can lead us to Minobimaadiziwin, the way of a good life. The teachings and the people are what keep me grounded."

de Haas's parents, Jason and Jessica, felt a number of different emotions when they heard she was one of the Loran Scholarship finalists.

"We are extremely proud of all of Gabriella's accomplishments and the young woman she has become. We have always encouraged her to work hard and try her best. To watch her succeed at this level is

absolutely incredible."

"Growing up, Gabriella was a bright little girl who always brought light and strength to whatever she did. She has always been a kind soul, and a friend to all."

"She is a natural teacher and an incredible sister. We could not be more proud of the young woman she has become."

If not selected as Loran Scholars, the students will each be eligible to receive a $5,000 Loran Finalist Award. For more information on the Loran Scholarship, visit www.loranscholar.ca.
