A SUMMER TRADITION CONTINUES AT HISTORIC HOLLOWAY CHAPEL

It's that time of year again.

Strawberries are in season, and the folks at Holloway Memorial Chapel in Crystal Beach are ready to celebrate with the annual Strawberry Festival.

"It's our 129th year for the chapel," said Anne Peters, chair for the strawberry festival. "It's run totally by a volunteer board."

The festival, as well as offerings during church services and other donations, is important to keep things going at the chapel, Peters said.

"This pays for everything, repairs, basically everything to keep the chapel going."

The Holloway Memorial Chapel was established in 1894 — predating the Point Abino's landmark lighthouse by 21 years — by Harriet Holloway Stafford and James B. Stafford in memory of Harriet's parents, Isaac and Mary Ann Holloway. The Holloway family and descendants continue as longtime residents of the area.

The chapel board is also involved in the community, organizing a large food drive annually along with collecting school supplies to be distributed to students in need.

This year's festival takes place June 21 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Buffalo Yacht Club, located at

1007 Point Abino Rd. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.

Guests will be treated to strawberries and whipped cream with chocolate

sauce and a variety of homemade cookies baked by trustees of the chapel.

Guests also will have a chance to bid on items ranging from wine baskets and Cherry Hill golf packages to Buffalo Sabres hockey tickets, Peters said.

"There's lots of really neat stuff."

The chapel hosts services Sundays at 10 a.m. for 12 weeks over the summer. All services are open to the public. Social gatherings are held three times a year after church services to open and close the season as well as another gathering mid-season.

Tickets can be purchased in advance at the Ridgeway Farmers' Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 10 and 17 or by calling Peters at 905-894-2840.
