ON THE HUNT FOR THOROLD'S TOP GARDEN

ENTRIES FOR THOROLD GARDEN CLUB CONTEST ACCEPTED UNTIL SEPT. 1

SOMER SLOBODIAN

Think you have the city's greatest garden?

At last weekend's Thorold Garden Club's Rose and Flower Show the club announced the launch of a brand-new contest.

The Year of the Garden Contest will showcase some of the best gardens in Thorold. Residents will need to nominate a garden that they think deserves recognition. That could be a neighbour's garden or even their own garden.

"This year has been designated as the Year of the Garden in Canada. This is a first and so it is being celebrated across our country," wrote Leslie Daniels, president of the Thorold Garden Club.

Judging the contest this year will be Theresa Forte. She is a garden consultant, photographer and writer in Niagara Falls who has given many garden lectures and workshops across Ontario.

The contest includes all gardens. It could be a rock garden, succulent garden, fairy garden, or any backyard garden. Everything counts. Nomination forms are available from July 2 to Aug. 31, with all entries to be in by Sept. 1.

To nominate, pick up an entry form at city hall, the

Thorold Seniors' Centre, or the Thorold Library. If nominating online, visit Thorold.ca or Thoroldgardenclub.com. Contact thoroldbloomscontest@gmail.com for more information.

The Rose and Flower Show was the first show back in person after two years of virtual shows.

The City of Thorold is just one of dozens of municipalities across the country to proclaim 2022 as the Year of the Garden.

Communities in Bloom and the Canadian Garden Council have invited municipalities to proclaim 2022 as the Year of the Garden for their citizens to acknowledge all the benefits that gardens and gardening provide.
