Re. Niagara IceDogs pull hockey jersey after backlash from Indigenous community, March 9:
Just in case anyone is not clear about the recent IceDogs sweater controversy, which included an image of a teepee on a jersey, here is an explanation of the team's name.
The hockey club named the Teepees has no connection to the Indigenous culture.
In 1947 Thompson Products, a St. Catharines manufacturing company, bought the St. Catharines
Junior A Falcons.
The company decided to name the team, the Tee (representing Thompson) and Pees (representing Products). Over the years sports writers and others joined the two words and the word Teepees was used to discuss the team.
The Teepees lasted until 1962 when new owners changed the name to the St. Catharines Black Hawks.
