PERSON DIES FOLLOWING CRASH IN BEAMSVILLE

OPP, NRPS AND EMS ATTENDED THE SCENE EARLY SATURDAY MORNING; ALL LANES HAVE SINCE RE-OPENED

VICTORIA NICOLAOU

One man has died following a multi-vehicle crash early Saturday morning on the QEW in Beamsville.

Ontario Provincial Police said officers initially responded to a collision call involving two vehicles at about 7:23 a.m. near the QEW Fort-Erie bound Ontario Street exit.

When officers arrived, OPP Const. Kevin Westhead said the crash had grown to include four vehicles. Niagara Regional Police were already at the scene, as well as an off-duty paramedic who performed life saving measures on one man involved in the collision.

The man was transported to an out-of-town hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

One other man was transported by Niagara Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital in stable condition.

While the investigation remains ongoing, Westhead said it appears there were three separate collisions, all occurring within a few minutes of each other.

"You have the initial two vehicles, then a tractor trailer comes along, hits one of them that is still in a live line, only partially," he said.

"Then the fourth vehicle comes, avoids one (vehicle) but then runs into the back of the tractor trailer."

All Niagara-bound lanes were closed until about 2:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon as officers remained at the scene, conducting collision reconstruction.

All lanes have since reopened.

Westhead said OPP is continuing its investigation. He anticipates criminal charges will be considered, as is the case with any fatal collision, but "at this point, we can't say who or what."

"We have a tons of witness statements to take, as well as the driver's statement to take. So, its all got to be puzzled back together in order to understand better what happened," he said.
