SOMER SLOBODIAN

Visitors will soon have even more opportunities to learn about the lives of War of 1812 soldiers at Fort George.

The Niagara-on-the-Lake national historic site offers visitors a chance to view its historic buildings, listen to daily demonstrations and connect with nature by walking one of the many nearby heritage trails. Visitors can start their day at the Parks Canada visitor centre where they can check out the gift shop and get all the information they need to enjoy their day.

Currently, it's open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. As of May 25, those hours of operation will expand to Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Parks Canada is offering many special events for this season.

Here are just a few:

WAR OF 1812 OFFICER'S DAY

Re-enactors will take visitors back in time to 1812 and give them a little taste of how the upper class lived. Visitors will get the chance to see the stunning decor and beautiful costumes in the Officers' Quarters. If you're a fan of "Bridgerton," then this event is for you. The event takes place on May 14 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

THE NORM FOSTER FESTIVAL THEATRE PRESENTS 1812

From June 8 to 23, Fort George National Historic Site will be running the production "1812" by Norm Foster.

The story is about two towns, St. Stephen, N.B., and Calais, Maine, and the challenges they face during the war of 1812. People from the communities find their friendships threatened in the wake of the war.

FORT GEORGE IN THE GREAT WAR

From June 25 to June 26, Fort George and Camp Niagara will restore their former military training camp. Re-enactors will be doing demonstrations to honour the brave soldiers who fought in the war.
