BARGAIN HUNTING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

MELINDA CHEEVERS

With the return of warm weather, Niagara has moved its way into garage sale season.

The Rotary Club of Niagara-on-the-Lake decided to use this to its advantage, bringing back a popular fundraising event: a gigantic garage sale. Held over the weekend at Cornerstone Community Church in Virgil, the event featured items donated by the community, including art, furniture, housewares, games, toys, electronics and more.

Things kicked off with a special VIP preview event on Friday before two days of sales to the general public.

Event organizer Carol Lipsett said a similar event in October brought in $14,000, which was divided between local and international causes. The funds from this weekend's event will be split the same way.

"People give us stuff and in turn, we give back to the community," she said, adding there had been a great turnout for the event.

On Monday, whatever items are left over will be donated to six other community organizations in need, including the Farmworker Hub, Newark Neighbours and St. Vincent de Paul, to name a few.
