THE RIDING:
Mississauga-erin Mills is one of six provincial ridings in the city. It shares borders with Milton, Burlington and Oakville ridings.
Census data from 2016 lists the total population of the riding as approximately 122,500 people. The riding covers 34 square kilometres.
This riding was redrawn in 2015 when the Liberal government at the time added 30 new ridings and extended boundaries for multiple ridings.
Portions of the old riding of Mississauga-erindale were moved into the current riding of Mississauga-lakeshore
In the 2018 election, approximately 55 per cent of
eligible voters turned out.
THE RACE:
Sheref Sabawy (incumbent), Progressive Conservative Party of Canada
Michelle Angkasa, Green Party of Ontario
Farina Hassan, Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP)
Imran Mian, Ontario Liberal party
Charles Wroblewski, New Blue Party of Ontario
THE ISSUES:
Census data shows the riding is home to large Pakistani, Filipino, Indian, Chinese and Egyptian populations.
Like many other ridings, voters in Erin Mills are concerned about cost of living, support for newcomers and pandemic recovery.
BACKGROUND:
Progressive Conservative Sabawy was elected in Mississauga-erin Mills in the 2018 provincial election. In 2015, he failed to secure the nomination for the riding in the federal election.
Sabawy is the parliamentary assistant to the Minister of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture industries.
He served as a member of the standing committee on general government until the legislature dissolved earlier this month.
In 2019, he tabled the private member Bill 106, proclaiming each July in Ontario as Egyptian Heritage Month.
During the last election, Sabawy beat Liberal candidate Imran Mian by almost 8,000 votes and NDP Farina Hassan by 6,300.
