SABRINA GAMROT sgamrot@mississauga.net

THE RIDING:

Mississauga-malton is one of six provincial ridings in Mississauga. It's located in the northeastern part of the city and encompasses Toronto Pearson International Airport and large portions of Mississauga's industrial area. It is surrounded by Mississauga, Toronto and Brampton ridings, including Etobicoke North, Brampton-south and Mississauga-streetsville.

Elections Ontario lists the population as 118,240. Mississauga-malton covers 96 square kilometres, making it the largest riding in the city in terms of area.

The riding was created in 2015 and incorporates parts of the old MississaugaBrampton South and Brampton-goreMalton ridings.

THE CANDIDATES:

• Deepak Anand (incumbent), Progressive Conservative Party of Canada • Aman Gill, Ontario Liberal Party • Waseem Ahmed, Ontario New Democratic Party (NDP) • Robert Chan, Green Party of Ontario • Van Nguyen, New Blue Party of Ontario

THE ISSUES:

There are multiple issues in the Malton riding, including employment opportunities, cost of living and transportation.

A study from Peel Climate Change Partnership identified Malton as being one of three communities in Peel most vulnerable to climate change.

Given the lack of tree coverage and emissions from the airport and nearby industrial belt, climate change mitigation is also an issue in Malton.

BACKGROUND:

Progressive Conservative Deepak Anand was elected in Mississauga-malton in 2018 defeating Liberal incumbent Amrit Mangat, of Mississauga-brampton South.

Anand is the parliamentary assistant to the minister of labour, training and skills development.

He has served as a member on the standing committee on social policy and government agencies and was the chair of the standing committee on regulations and private bills.

Anand worked on Bill 231, which requires gas station employers to require customers to prepay before given gasoline in order to stop gas-and-dash incidents.
