MISSISSAUGA EAST-COOKSVILLE: 2022 ONTARIO ELECTION PROFILE

THE RIDING

Located just beyond the Mississauga/toronto border, Mississauga EastCooksville begins at the Etobicoke Creek to the east and extends as far west as Mavis Road.

Its other boundaries are Queensway on the south and stretches of Eglinton Avenue, Hwy. 403 and Central Parkway on the north.

According to the 2021 Census, the riding has a population of 116,346, a decrease of nearly 4,000 people since 2016.

THE ISSUES

COVID-19 recovery, health care, long-term care and affordability are among constituents' concerns leading up to the election.

The riding has two GO Transit stations (Dixie and Cooksville) within its boundaries while the Hurontario LRT will eventually run through the district between Queensway and Central Parkway.

South Asian, Filipino and Black are the most populous minority groups represented in the riding and the median household income is $68,596, according to Census data. The median age in the riding is 42.3

BACKGROUND

Created in 2003 from parts of the Mississauga Centre and Mississauga East ridings, the district was first contested in 2007.

Kaleed Rasheed has represented the riding at Queen's Park since 2018, when he defeated then-incumbent Dipika Damerla by more than 4,500 votes.

Last June, Rasheed was appointed the province's associate minister of digital government.

Damerla, former minister of senior affairs and associate minister for long-term care and wellness, previously served as MPP for the riding from 2011 to 2018. Liberal Peter Fonseca was elected the first MPP for the riding in 2007.

The provincial election is June 2.
