Penetanguishene Mayor Doug Leroux will not be seeking re-election.
Instead, Leroux will vie for a councillor seat in the upcoming municipal election scheduled for Oct. 24.
"While it has been an honour and privilege to represent the people of our town during these trying times, and I have always endeavoured to make the best decisions for the collective good of our wonderful community, I would like to be able to spend more time with family," stated Leroux, in an email to Simcoe.com.
Leroux was elected to council in 2014 and served one term as a councillor before running for mayor. In 2018, he defeated incumbent
Gerry Marshall and took over as head of council.
Leroux believes he can still bring valuable experience and knowledge to the council table.
"I certainly think I still have something to offer,"
said Leroux. "There are things that I have dealt with and put in place that I would like to see come to fruition. I would still like to represent the people and the taxpayer of Penetanguishene, but in a less heavy role."
