WHAT'S GOING ON HERE?

YARN BOMBING AT LIBRARY, 967 INNISFIL BEACH RD.

The front of the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library in Alcona has been transformed with vibrant knit and crochet in a yarn bombing to mark National Deafblind Awareness Month.

JUST THE FACTS

• Innisfil Mayor Lynn Dollin and council members visited a yarn bombing display June 1 at the Innisfil ideaLAB and Library in Alcona. The display, made up of patches of crochet and knit work, is meant to raise awareness about Deafblind Awareness Month and DeafBlind Ontario Services.

• According to organizers, the yarn is used because it is very tactile and lets people imagine the way a deaf-blind person might perceive their surroundings. Deafblindness is a combination of hearing and vision loss. About one per of Canada's population, or approximately 466,420 people, are deaf-blind — 211,250 live in Ontario.

• The colourful installation at the Innisfil library is made up of knit and crochet squares created by people supported by DeafBlind Ontario Services, intervenors, friends and family, local knitting clubs, and community members from across the province.

• June, the birth month of Helen Keller, was proclaimed by the Senate of Canada in 2015 as National Deafblind Awareness Month.

• DeafBlind Ontario Services provides an array of services to people who are Deaf, hard of hearing, non-verbal and deafblind that are customized to each individual's unique needs, method of communication, and goals to enrich their life.
