SAFETY IMPROVEMENTS NEEDED

STAN NOWAK DUNDAS

I was saddened to learn of the recent accident at the intersection of King and Albert Streets in Dundas, just a block south of where we live. My wife and I use that intersection countless times, admittedly thinking the cars would yield to us, and most do, but a lot don't!

Yes, our roadways are "simply too easy to drive too fast and too dangerously." But today, expedient remedial action is needed to amend any confusion about this intersection! The uncertainty stems from the striped pattern painted through the intersection, the assumption being that the striped pattern allows the pedestrian the right of way, no matter what other signage is present. The same striped crossing pattern is used at Memorial Square and at Sydenham and Alma Streets right beside St. Augustine's School, BUT they both have either lights or all-way stops to bolster the crosswalks for maximum pedestrian safety. Perhaps, at least for now, stop signs and yield bars should be added at King and Albert as well.
