CANDIDATES TACKLE UNSAFE STREETS IN WARD 7 DEBATE

INCUMBENT ESTHER PAULS, CHALLENGER SCOTT DUVALL ALSO SPAR OVER SEVERAL ISSUES

Both Ward 7 candidates say more needs to be done to address the issue of safety on Hamilton's streets and sidewalks, where a record number of pedestrian deaths have occurred this year.

At a Sept. 17 debate presented by Cable 14 and The Hamilton Spectator, Esther Pauls and Scott Duvall expressed concern over the number of drivers speeding in their community.

There have been two fatal collisions — one involving a pedestrian, and one involving a cyclist — in the central Mountain ward this year.

Pauls, the incumbent, said while traffic calming measures such as speed bumps and signage are important, road safety "isn't just about infrastructure."

"It's about being attentive and responsible, whether you're driving, cycling or walking," said Pauls, who has proposed a public awareness campaign.

Challenger and former Hamilton Mountain MP Scott Duvall said "more things can happen" and suggested advanced green signals, pedestrian scrambles and wider sidewalks could be part of the solution.

Duvall also pointed to speed bumps as an option, but noted the potential cost as an issue. He claimed each speed bump costs around $7,000 and that "everyone wants them on their street."

"We have to make more improvements, but what is the cost going to be?" asked Duvall. "When are people going to smarten up about driving recklessly?"

Pauls also went after motorists, calling for them to recognize that "if you own a car, you have a weapon in your hands."

Duvall called for additional enforcement on city streets, to which Pauls said residents "need to realize" that police can't be on every corner.

The Ward 7 contenders also sparred over housing, garbage collection, the Hamilton Farmers' Market and council decorum during the televised event.
