STOP SELFISHNESS

It's sad to see selfishness continue to be endorsed by those running for Hamilton city council. One of the Ancaster candidates profiled recently in this paper declared that they "would not back down" on retaining the area-rating tax scheme for transit.

Why should the wealthiest part of our community pay only one-third the tax rate for transit that is collected from the people who live in the former city of Hamilton?

This substantial tax break has been given to urban residents of former suburbs including Dundas and Stoney Creek for over 20 years.

Ours is the only city in Ontario where some urban dwellers are given lower transit taxes than others. This unfairness was supposed to be temporary. It should have ended long ago.

Incredibly, the same candidate wants improved HSR service but is against funding it, and also claims to be for the environment. No doubt they are also "concerned" about climate change. We need better.
