A Georgetown teen is facing multiple charges following a "strange incident" on Highway 401. On May 9 at around 11 a.m., Ontario Provincial Police responded to reports of a single-vehicle collision in the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401, just past Markham Road in Scarborough.

The vehicle reportedly sustained significant damage and the airbags had deployed.

"A male exited the vehicle and was seen running around the highway," said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt in a post on Twitter.

Schmidt said some Good Samaritans stopped and attempted to help this person at which point, it's alleged, the man attempted to carjack his would-be benefactors.

"There was a scuffle, the carjacking was unsuccessful, and the person subsequently fled across the highway, across the collector lanes and into a residential/business area just off the highway," said Schmidt.

Ontario Provincial Police officers attended the area and made one arrest.

A 19-year-old has been charged with multiple offences, including assault, mischief and careless driving.

The charges have not been proven in court.

Police thanked those who tried to help but reminded drivers to also watch out for their own personal safety.

"Maybe stay in your vehicle and call 911 if you see something suspicious," said Schmidt.

"Fortunately, everything ended OK. We have one suspect in custody and no one else is injured."
