COUNCIL HEARS FOWLER'S TOAD CONCERNS

As Fort Erie council rejoined for the first meeting of 2023, future development impacting the environment and recovery from the Dec. 23 winter storm were the most discussed topics of the evening.

FOWLER'S TOAD CONCERNS

As residents and councillors discussed the proposed zoning bylaw amendment for 214 Windmill Point Rd. S., a common concern raised was the destruction of habitat for the Fowler's toad.

The Fowler's toad is an endangered toad in Ontario that lives along the northern shores of Lake Erie and requires both a wetland environment and beaches in different parts of its life cycle, according to Ontario.ca.

When questioned if the toad even resides in the area, residents encouraged councillors to visit Point Road South in the mating season to "listen to the chorus that is being sung."

Several residents raised concerns about the impact of the divide of land, noting that the Fowler's toad would have to cross over these lots from the wetland where it breeds to the beaches where it lives.

"I do have some concerns about the Fowler's toad. It has to be worked out before we hop along," joked Coun. Ann-Marie Noyes. "I do think that is a valid concern, particularly from an environmental point of view."

Councillors agreed unanimously to move for
