LETTER ON EDUCATION LACKS EVIDENCE

ANTHONY VIOLA GRIMSBY

Re. Students should come first, Letter, May 12:

The writer lists his beliefs but he offers no evidence nor metrics to support them.

The writer states that the education sector produces mediocre results. BBC education correspondent Sean Coughlan stated in 2017 that Canada has climbed into the top tier of global educational rankings.

The writer refers to a "gold plated" pension plan whatever that may mean. The Teachers Pension Plan is just that, a pension plan. Like all other pension plans its membership, funding, and structure follow strict legislative regulation. It could be the case that the writer is referring to the Plan's performance but that is dependent on the Plan's management group which is an independent entity paid for by the Plan members.

Reference is also made to the lack of accountability of educators but educators are governed by umpteen pieces of both federal and provincial legislation not to mention the numerous legislatively dependent provincial regulations and guidelines. Then too, there is the College of Teachers and its multitude of rules and regulations.

I would think that one's ability to improve something can only come from a correct understanding of what needs to be improved.
