GRAND OPENING OF BOBBY'S PLACE IN WATERDOWN, OCT. 1

MAC CHRISTIE mchristie@flamborough review.com

Waterdown's Grace Anglican Church will unveil Bobby's Place to the community on Saturday, Oct. 1.

Bobby's Place is named for the late Bobby Smylie, who died in 2018 from influenza at the age of 10.

The Smylie family is expected to attend the grand opening, as well as Bishop Susan Bell, Ward 15 Coun. Judi Partridge, members of the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and former Hamilton mayor Larry Di Ianni, who will serve as MC.

The grand opening will run from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting and bell-ringing ceremony set for 2:30 p.m. The day will also feature tours, musical entertainment, a bouncy castle, children's scavenger hunts and games, historical displays, program information and refreshments.

Bobby's Place, an addition to Grace Anglican Church, is located at 157 Mill St. N. in Waterdown with parking at the back of the property off Main Street North. It is also home to the Flintoft Bell, named in honour of Thomas Flintoft, a lance corporal with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry.

The space is expected to enhance the church's ability to serve as a community hub where people can meet to engage in social, recreational, artistic, cultural, spiritual and community building activities.

It will be home to a variety of programs and services, including the Grace Inclusive Cafe and the Graceful Abilities day program, which will provide employment, connections and lifegiving opportunities for people with disabilities.
