COUN. ROB SMITH TO RUN FOR MAYOR

From proposed housing developments to a wastewater treatment plant, the Town of Erin is expected to grow.

Coun. Rob Smith hopes to lead the town into the future by filing his nomination papers to become mayor of Erin in the fall election.

"It's a big step for me, my family and the future of Erin," said Smith. "My kids are born and raised in Erin, and this is as much for them as it is for everybody in town."

Smith has been a twotime councillor in addition to being an owner and president of Erin Auto Recyclers. He spent time on the town's environmental advisory committee before his eight years on council. He is passionate about the community.

"It's a natural progression to go to the next level," said Smith. "I think it is no different than having a job and moving forward. I think it's important there's someone running who's aware of what's going on."

He is not running on one specific platform but instead looks forward to tourism, infrastructure and business development in town.

"There are many different facets that play in town that all have to come together at the same time," said Smith. "We're going to have one shot to do this right, and that is it. We won't have a second shot at this."

That development will not be possible without the construction of the wastewater treatment plant. The town broke ground on it on April 29. It received heavy opposition from detractors who believe it will harm fish life in the West Credit River. Smith believes otherwise.

"By the time we're finished, I believe we're going to have the most technologically advanced plant in North America," said Smith. "I believe at this point, we're the only plant in North America to cool and regulate the water temperature. I have a feeling it will be a benchmark wastewater treatment plant that all other plants are being held to."

Those interested in vying for the position have until Aug. 19 at 2 p.m. to submit their papers. Municipal elections will then take place on Oct. 24.
