ONTARIO VOTES 2022: AN OVERVIEW OF THE WELLINGTON-HALTON HILLS RIDING

WE BREAK DOWN THE WELLINGTON-HALTON HILLS RIDING FROM ITS SIZE TO ITS 2022 ONTARIO ELECTION CANDIDATES

THE RIDING: The provincial riding of WellingtonHalton Hills includes Guelph and Eramosa, Puslinch Erin, Centre Wellington and Halton Hills. It covers 1,584 square kilometres. The riding has a population of 120,981, according to the latest Statistics Canada data in 2016.

THE RACE: Progressive Conservative Party of

Ontario: Ted Arnott

Arnott is the incumbent candidate. He has served as a Member of Provincial Parliament for WellingtonHalton Hills at dissolution since 2007. He first won election in 1990.

New Democratic Party of Ontario: Diane Ballantyne

Ballantyne is a teacher. This is her second time running as the provincial NDP candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills.

Ontario Liberal Party: Tom Takacs

Takacs is a master electrician and adult educator. This is his first time running as the provincial Liberal candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills.

Green Party of Ontario: Ryan Kahro

Kahro is a stay-at-home parent. This is her first time running as a provincial Green Party candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills.

New Blue Party of Ontario: Stephen Kitras

Kitras is a business owner. He is the local candidate for the newly

formed New Blue Party of Ontario.

Consensus Party of Ontario: Ron Patava

Patava is a business consultant. He serves as the

party president and is the Consensus Party candidate for Wellington-Halton Hills.

THE ISSUES: Housing affordability and the cost of living, with increased gas and grocery prices are expected to be top issues heading into the election. Supporting health care workers, conditions in long-term care, climate change and protecting natural resources, such as farm and wetlands are priorities on the campaign trail.

BACKGROUND: The riding has had a Progressive Conservative stronghold for more than a decade. It was created in 2007 from the former Waterloo-Wellington riding from 1999 to 2007 and Wellington riding before that from 1990 to 1999. Arnott has been serving his constituents since 1990 as one of the longest serving MPPs in the Ontario legislature.

Arnott won the 2018 election with 54 per cent of the votes, while challenger, Diane Ballantyne of the NDP gained 24 per cent of the vote.
