We know that alternatives to driving like walking and biking are not only better for the environment, but they are better for your overall health too. As the weather gets warmer consider the benefits of biking! Not only will you save a couple of bucks on parking and gas, but you could also discover a new hobby and discover the area and neighbourhoods around where you live more!

The benefiTs of cycling: It’s good exercise!

The health benefits of physical activity, including cycling, are widely recognized, In an era where nearly a third of children and youth and just under two-thirds of adults are overweight or obese, cycling for leisure or transport is a valuable form of exercise. (Statcan.gc.ca)

Time and cost effective

The cost of fuel now is at an all-time high, a vehicle depending on where you live can also be quite costly but, not only do you save on driving, but you can also save on public transport when you choose to opt-out for a bike! Biking also saves you from some awful city traffic, and if you start to pick up biking as a sport you can save some time and money on gym memberships and classes!

It’s better for the environment

Bicycle riding uses no fossil fuels and is a pollution-free mode of transport. Bikes reduce the need to build, service and dispose of cars. Bicycle riding conserves roadway and residential space, thereby providing opportunities for less concrete and more plant life in urban areas

While we encourage you to try biking, we want to make sure you are staying safe as there are lots of obstacles, hazards, and rules you should abide by to ensure your bike ride is as safe as it possibly can be.

safeTy Tips for biking: Protect yourself

Cycling can be fun and good for your overall health, but there unfortunately are risks if you aren’t properly prepared or know the safety precautions to take on the road. Make sure you look up the roads and where you choose to bike, avoid roads with heavy car traffic and try your best to bike on roads that have infrastructure catered to biking. See and been seen – wear reflective gear/clothes when biking at any time during the day. Fluorescent and neon colours tends to help others notice you more.

Obey All Traffic Laws. A bicycle is a vehicle and you’re a driver. When you ride in the street, obey all traffic signs, signals, and lane markings, and make sure you are always looking before turning.
