SIGNS FOR HIGHWAY 413 GO UP IN CALEDON

Despite protests and some opposition from residents and environmentalists, the Ontario government shows no signs right now of scrapping the proposed Highway 413 and transitway that will run through Halton, Peel and York regions. A key reelection promise on the campaign trail, the Progressive Conservatives maintain the project would create jobs, address traffic congestion and could save drivers up to 30 minutes on their commute.

JUST THE FACTS

• The Ministry of Transportation says the Future Site of Highway 413 signs were installed on Friday, April 29.

• The planned 52-kilometre 400-series highway would have four to six lanes and connect Highway 400 in the east near

Vaughan to the Highway 401/407 ETR interchange area in the west near Mississauga, Milton and Halton Hills.

• The project also includes a four-kilometre extension to Highway 410 and a three-kilometre extension to Highway 427.

• The transitway exclusive for public transit would be adjacent to the highway.

• The project has not yet been approved and is currently under a provincial environmental assessment.

• It is also a designated project under the federal Impact Assessment Act over potential effects on the critical habitat of federally listed species at risk.
