SAFETY TIPS TO REMEMBER AROUND BODIES OF WATER THIS SPRING

SPRING TEMPS INCREASE THE RISKS FOR BOTH PEOPLE AND PETS

Credit Valley Conservation (CVC) is reminding people of the hazards near rivers, streams, ponds and lakes this time of year and are encouraging residents to keep their families and pets away from waterways.

Remember these safety tips as you head outdoors this spring:

• Keep family and pets away from the edges of all bodies of water.

• Refrain from taking part in recreational activities in or around water, especially ice-covered watercourses and waterbodies.

• Do not try to walk on ice-covered waterbodies or attempt to drive through flooded roads or fast-moving water.

• If you live close to the water, move objects away from the water's edge, such as chairs or benches, to avoid losing them during a potential spring high water.

• Limit walking close to or across riverbanks and ice-covered water to avoid falling through. Riverbanks have the possibility to become unstable in the spring as a result of melting snow and erosion.

• Rescuing people or animals from icy water is dangerous. If you see a person or pet that has fallen through the ice, call 911 for help immediately.
