The city's film and television office reported a record year for industry in Brampton in 2021, with some high-profile TV shows using Brampton as a backdrop for their productions.

The office reported a total of 80 film, television and commercial productions filmed in the city last year, encompassing 109 filming days, with an estimated combined local economic impact of just over $18 million in economic activity and $397,461 in revenue for the city.

"I think we broke many records in terms of the number of days filming here (and) in terms of revenue in the eight years since the Film and Television office has existed," manager of tourism and special events Laura Lukasik told council during an update at its April 27 meeting.

"We saw a tremendous growth of production filming on location, but there was also a steady use of converted studio space and standing sets," added Brampton's film services and tourism specialist, Michael Ciuffini.

Some of the more highprofile productions that filmed in Brampton in 2021 included Paramount+ filming parts of the first season of its upcoming show "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" on a sound stage in Brampton. The city also served as the backdrop for parts of the Prime TV series "Reacher."

Apple TV+ chose Brampton to film a large part of its futuristic, postapocalyptic streaming series "See" starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista. Much of that series' second season was filmed at the end of 2020 and well into 2021 on an elaborate set built at the Claireville Conservation Area.

Apple also filmed parts of new series in Mount Pleasant Village and digitally mapped out a Mount Pleasant Village Square for a new Apple TV+ series with the working title "Zone."

Netflix was also in town last year to film its upcoming feature film "13," a musical production filmed both in studio and on location in Brampton last summer, including at the CAA Centre grounds and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

News of the uptick in film and television productions taking place in the city was very well received by members of council, who directed city staff to look for new ways to help bolster the industry in the city.
