THE RIDING

Brampton West is in the northwest area of the city, sharing a border with Caledon and Halton Hills.

Census numbers from 2016 show the population as 130,000.

The boundaries for the riding were established in 2007 from Brampton West—Mississauga and Brampton Centre.

THE RACE

• Amarjot Sandhu (incumbent), Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario

• Rimmy Jhajj, Ontario Liberal Party

• Navjit Kaur, Ontario New Democratic Party

• David Pardy, New Blue Party of Ontario

• Pauline Thornham, Green Party of Ontario

THE ISSUES

The community has high South Asian and Jamaican populations, according to census information from Stats Canada.

The route for the proposed Highway 413 goes through the riding along the north and west ends.

Like many residents across Ontario, people are concerned with increasing costs of living, affordable housing, and community safety. Many people would like to see Brampton get additional hospitals.

BACKGROUND

Progressive Conservative Sandhu was elected in Brampton West on June 7, 2018.

He beat out NDP candidate Jagroop Singh by a mere 490 votes.

He also upset longtime Liberal incumbent Vic Dhillon, who had served as MPP since the riding's inception in 2007.

During his term, Sandhu was parliamentary assistant to the minister of infrastructure, member of the Standing Committee on General Government and member of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts.

The provincial election is on June 2.
