WHAT DO OUR CANDIDATES THINK ABOUT TRANSIT STUDY?

DAVID THOM TORRANCE

I am a property owned in the township of Muskoka Lakes. My question for the candidates is the following: Summer weekend traffic on overburdened Highway 11 and 400 is as predictable as a lovely Muskoka sunset. If elected, would you work to have the provincial transit agency Metrolinx study a seasonal weekend extension of GO Transit up the Richmond Hill line to Gravenhurst, Bracebridge and Huntsville?

This would give friends and family an alternative to driving before being picked up in town, and daytrippers would spur economic development within the towns and at nearby resorts. The CapeFLYER out of Boston has been running something very similar since 2013 with such success that the line is even profitable. The tracks are there, the stations are there, the equipment is there — all that is needed is a push from the government for GO and CN to try out such an "excursion service" as an experiment, just as was done with Niagara Falls in 2009.
