The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined an officer from the Nottawasaga OPP detachment in Alliston should not be charged in connection to a crash that left a person with a broken jaw.

The SIU report said the incident happened Nov. 22 around 2 p.m. while an officer in an unmarked vehicle attempted to pull over a speeding vehicle on Highway 89 near Wesson Road.

The report said the eastbound vehicle was clocked travelling 140 kilometres per hour in the 80-km/h zone. The vehicle fled the scene, but ended up losing control and crashing into a ditch while attempting to pass another vehicle on the right shoulder. The vehicle rolled and the passenger in the vehicle, an 18-year-old man, broke his jaw.

SIU director Joseph

Martino determined no criminal charges were warranted against the officer. "Director Martino was not satisfied that the officer's conduct departed markedly from a reasonable standard of care such as to render it criminal," reads the finding.

The SIU is an arm'slength agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
