With the rental market still out of reach for many, the situation also hasn't improved for people seeking housing support in Simcoe County.

"The current wait times for rent-geared-to-income is on average three to five years for households with dependants and up to nine years for households without dependants," county housing programs manager Tom Fortier said.

As of December 2021, there were 4,664 households on the wait list.

Factors that impact wait times include where the unit is located, the size required and age of applicants.

Fortier said the county recognizes the difficulties many vulnerable people are experiencing, and the county is working on solutions.

"For example, we are currently undertaking an acquisition and renovation for permanent housing with supports in the City of Barrie, and currently in planning and construction stages for three new mixeduse affordable and seniors housing developments in Barrie, Orillia and the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury," he said.

Fortier also noted the Simcoe Village campus in Beeton includes more than 180 housing units for older adults with varying levels of support needs.
