The Town of New Tecumseth will have to dip even further into its contingency fund in order to pay for some extra expenses related to the $20-million administration centre construction project in Alliston.

At the May 9 council meeting, staff provided a status update on the project at 25 Albert St. W., where the Alliston Union Public School used to be located.

In a report, Daniel Burton, the director of parks, recreation and culture, said the project has had 16 change orders since it began around September of last year, resulting in nearly $178,000 in additional costs, which represents about 18 per cent of the contingency budget.

"These changes are as a

result of unknown conditions which existed below the finished surface, which would not have been visible during the design period, increase in price escalation for door hardware, and increased transformer vault infrastructure as a result of changes from the local hydro company," he wrote.

In February, Burton informed council the project would be delayed up to six weeks due to work that had to be performed to remove an underground holding tank that was discovered.

His report also highlighted the progress that's been made to date.

"During this reporting period the footings and foundations for the twostorey addition have been completed," the report stated.

"The structural wood framing members and wood roof decking has been installed and completed. The interior works have progressed completing all below-grade works within the footprint of the building and interior room partitions, and block walls for service areas has been completed."

The town originally planned to have the building substantially completed and opened in September, but Burton said this has been pushed back to the final quarter, sometime between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31.
