The town is planning to honour a pioneer family with a future park in the Treetops community in Alliston.

Council has approved a request to name the dog park and woodlot that will be located east of Kennedy Boulevard North after members of the Ellison family, who used to operate a farm in the area for more than 80 years.

Multiple generations of the family farmed the property from 1924 until it was sold to developer Lou Biffis in 2005.

Council approved the recommendation at the May 9 committee of the

whole meeting. The request was permitted under the town's naming policy.

"That's the history of that property, and we are losing our family farms' history by not recognizing those families," noted

Coun. Donna Jebb.

Road resurfacing

A a pair of rural roads are about to get some much-needed attention.

Council has approved a recommendation to resurface the 13th Line and 9th

Line between Sideroad 15 and 20.

A staff report noted the two areas have "deteriorated beyond the means of standard levels of service."

The town is budgeting to spend more than $1.4 million on the work. Significant properties Committee of the whole has approved a recommendation from the heritage advisory committee to add three more buildings to the town's list of significant properties.

The properties include the Muddy Water Hotel at 25 Main St. W. in Beeton, and two heritage homes located at 161 Centre St. N. in Beeton and 12 Mill St E. in Tottenham.

Coun. Shira Harrison McIntyre explained the difference between adding a building to the list of significant properties, as opposed to designating one as a heritage property. She said no restrictions are placed on a building when it's added to the significant properties list. "It's really just a nod ... to say we recognize this as a significant property and there is research that is done on it," she said.

The town has 28 properties on the significant property list, and nine are designated as heritage properties.
