PORT COLBORNE HOME DESTROYED IN MORNING FIRE

MULTIPLE AGENCIES RESPOND TO ASSIST PORT COLBORNE FIRE SERVICE

DAVE JOHNSON

Tanker trucks from Wainfleet, Fort Erie and Niagara Falls responded to Port Colborne early in the morning May 13 as firefighters in that city battled a fire in a large residential home.

Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services firefighters were called to 936 Cedar Bay Rd. just after 1 a.m. for a reported structure fire.

The first responding truck, Engine 1, reported visible flames before arriving on scene as it travelled east on Highway 3 and immediately called for more tankers.

Wainfleet Fire and Emergency Services Engine 3 and Tanker 3 were already on their way to assist Port Colborne under a new agreement between the two municipalities.

Wainfleet's tanker responded to the scene, as did Chief Morgan Alcock,

while Engine 3 manned Port Colborne's Killaly Street West fire hall.

Fort Erie Fire Department Chief Ed Melanson responded along with two tankers from his municipality.

When firefighters arrived on scene, they found

a home — set back in a wooded area at least 50 metres or more from Cedar Bay Road — engulfed in flames. It was reported that everyone was out of the house. There were no apparent injuries.

Niagara Emergency Medical Services paramedics

were on standby at the scene and had a stretcher set up near the road.

Niagara Regional Police had Cedar Bay Road shut down at the intersection of Highway 3.

Water was shuttled to the rural scene from a fill station on Elizabeth Street,

about 5.5-kilometres west of the fire scene.

The house was destroyed in the fire, and firefighters were still there as of 3:15 a.m. Port Colborne fire Chief Scott Lawson was on scene and said he'd have more details on the blaze during the day.
