NEW LINCOLN LIONS CLUB FORMING

GROUP HOPES TO GET UP TO 20 MEMBERS NEEDED FOR A CHARTER IN 2023

A new pride is coming to Lincoln.

The Lincoln Lions recently welcomed its 10th member, getting halfway to the 20 members required for the club to be able to charter. Club president Gord Gerrie is hopeful they'll hit that total by the end of 2023 and, with any luck, by the end of the Lions' year in June.

Gerrie said the new club is forming not so much to compete with existing clubs in the area but as an option to bring in new ideas.

"We're creating a club

that's inclusive and open to new ideas," he said. "We don't want to replicate the kinds of things (other clubs) are doing."

With support from the Grimsby Lions, who are acting as the branch club, Gerrie said they've already gotten out into the community, holding some fundraisers

and participating in events.

One project that has so far proven quite successful is the repurposing of old outdoor signs. Gerrie, a real estate agent, often uses lawn signs in his business. The club collected a bunch of similar signs that no longer serve a purpose and

turned them into an insert for yard waste bags, making life a little easier for home gardeners and making a little money the club can put to a good cause.

Lions Clubs, in general, have a few pillars or services. However, Gerrie pointed out that each individual club has the freedom to focus

its efforts as they see fit. The Lincoln club is in the process of determining where its focus will lie.

Fortunately, their club has already managed to collect some money through yard waste insert sales, a penny sale, silent auction and simply generous donations from community members. However, starting from zero is a challenge, so building up their funds will continue to be a priority. Gerrie's hopeful, though, that by this time next year they'll be in a position to give $5,000 back to the community.

In the meantime, they're also looking for new members.

"Great members who are willing to invest whatever time they have, that they feel is appropriate," he said.

Other than being at least 21 years old, there are no restrictions on joining, he added.

"The most important thing is that they want to give back to the community."

Currently, they're looking for people with both a general interest and some with specific skills such as social media.

The club meets the first and third Wednesday of every month at the building on 4996 Beam St. in Beamsville. For more information, visit lincolnlions.ca.

They're also holding an information night on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 4996 Beam St. Learn about the new club and Lions in general. It begins at 7 p.m. To reserve a seat call 905-6501420.
