Smithville residents who said the "annoying" hum coming from the Stanpac factory disturbed their sleep may soon be able to rest easy, now that the company is taking additional steps to lower the noise.

Residents near the factory have been complaining about the noise coming from the factory around the clock ever since a new piece of equipment was installed in 2020.

Documents from West Lincoln council show that the township has received over 30 complaints about the noise, which Smithville resident Simon Musca described as a "buzzing in your brain."

Now, the company thinks it has a solution to reduce the noise and has asked the township for the minor variance fee and building permit fee to be waived.

Murray Bain, vice president of marketing for Stanpac, said "details are still being developed but we are working with a design firm that has a specialty in acoustics to construct something that will

make further reductions."

Documents submitted to councillors by Brian Treble, director of planning

and building, stated that "discussions have identified the prospect of an enclosure with a roof

being a solution that should resolve the issue."

The price of the construction is estimated at $200,000, plus application fees to the township.

At a West Lincoln planning, building, environmental committee meeting on May 9, councillors voted in favour of waiving the minor variance fees of $1,725 and building fees estimated at $3,700.

They also voted to support the recommendation for township staff to work with the committee of adjustment to process the application as quickly as possible to allow a building permit to be issued.

The motion passed by a majority vote 6-1.

In support of the motion, councillor William Reilly said that "both councillor (Cheryl) Ganann and I have been inundated for the last couple of years with similar concerns... I think what's being asked here is reasonable."
