Jeff Jordan has filed his nomination papers, seeking re-election as Grimsby's Mayor.

Jordan said he arrived at the clerk's office bright and early on May 2 when nominations opened to put his name in.

He said he's proud of what the town has accomplished over the last four years, but he'd like to see some of the big projects through to the end, particularly Grimsby's GO Station and the new West Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

"It was election day in 2018 when Hamilton Health Sciences announced the shutting down of services at West Lincoln Memorial

Hospital, and by that Friday (the Niagara West mayors) had met with the premier for the first time and put it on his radar really quickly," he said.

If re-elected, another thing Jordan said he'd love to have is an "open mic"style session before council meetings, where residents can freely come and ask council questions.

"Just a different format for someone who just wants to ask a couple of questions," he said.

Maintaining Grimsby's character and heritage are high on Jordan's radar too, as well as improving the region's environment.

"We are in the Carolinian forest zone, and Niagara only has 17 per cent canopy coverage," he said. "Healthy cities have 30 per cent. So we have a long way to go on that too."

First elected to the town's council 1997, Jordan took a step back from public service in 2006 to take care of his family and businesses.

He won in 2018 with 72 per cent of the vote.

"I want to continue to strive for even more openness and transparency on council," he said. "I've never wavered from that. It's something I talked about four years ago, and I still think we have a lot further to go."

Potential candidates have until Aug. 19 to file nomination papers. The 2022 municipal election will be held Monday, Oct. 24.
